My woggle - Mein Halstuchknoten

  • Hello Folks,

this one is in English because I haven't got a clue about Scouting in Germany. Here goes:

One important item as part of the Scout uniform is a neckerchief. A triangular piece of cloth which is rolled up and worn around the neck upon the shirt collar. The Germans would call it "das Dreieckstuch".The German Scouts call it "das Halstuch" apparently.
The neckerchief is not bound with a knot, but with a special accessory called a woggle.
While I was in the Scouts, every lad had to make his own woggle.
Mine was carved from a block of wood. Unfortunately it got lost somewhere down the line.
Which is why, a while ago, I decided to make a new one.

This woggle was made from one single length of spruce root (Fichtenwurzel).
The root was kept with other roots in a bucket of water for about 3 weeks.
After this the rind was stripped from the root and the root tied into a Turk's-Head-Knot (Türkischer Bund) around a thick stick and left to dry.
Once it was completely dry I stained it with olive oil and let it stand in the sun for a day.

I just need to make a new neckerchief :D

    Cheers Mike
